What Is A City Academy?

City Academies, publicly funded independent secondary schools at the heart of their communities with private and voluntary sponsorship, are designed to raise standards using greater freedom than is available to maintained schools. City Academies are a government initiative launched in March 2000, and aiming to raise standards by breaking the cycle of under-performance and low expectations. Partly funded by sponsorship from businesses, individuals, churches and other faith groups, they will serve the community, offering places to pupils of all abilities.

City Academies are all-ability schools and inclusive. Like all other mainstream schools, they will be expected to admit pupils with special educational needs and disabilities as appropriate.
